Full-Service Flooring Installation Across Connecticut

Flooring installation in Connecticut costs between $6 and $25 per square foot installed depending on the material, and most residential projects complete in two to five days. Whole-home installations or projects requiring subfloor repair may run seven to ten days. Every project is managed by our in-house team, not subcontracted out. We hold a Connecticut Home Improvement Contractor license (#0668405) and carry full liability and workers' compensation insurance.

The right flooring choice depends on the room, the level of the home, moisture exposure, and how you use the space. Connecticut's seasonal humidity swings make those decisions more consequential than they are in more stable climates. We install flooring throughout Fairfield and New Haven Counties, both as standalone projects and as part of larger kitchen, bathroom, and basement renovations.

Scope of Work

What Is Included in a Flooring Installation

Completed hardwood flooring installation in a Connecticut home by BuiltWell CT

A complete flooring installation covers subfloor assessment and preparation, removal and disposal of existing flooring, underlayment, the installation itself, transition strips, base shoe or quarter-round molding, and cleanup.

We start every flooring project with a thorough assessment of the existing subfloor. We check for level, moisture content, structural integrity, soft spots, and any damage that needs correction before new material goes down. A quality floor is only as good as what is underneath it, and subfloor problems that get covered up show up quickly in the finished surface.

Standard installation includes removal and disposal of existing flooring, subfloor preparation and leveling where required, appropriate underlayment for the material being installed, the installation itself to manufacturer specifications, transition strips between rooms and between different flooring types, and quarter-round or base shoe molding where the floor meets the baseboard.

We move standard furniture within the work area at the start of installation and replace it once the new floor is in. Additional scope that adds cost includes subfloor repair or replacement for damaged sections, custom patterns or inlays, floor leveling with self-leveling compound over larger areas, or the removal of multiple layers of existing flooring.

Subfloor Assessment

Level check, moisture testing, structural integrity inspection, and identification of soft spots or damage.

Removal & Disposal

Removal and disposal of existing flooring materials, including carpet, tile, vinyl, or hardwood.

Underlayment

Appropriate underlayment selection and installation matched to the flooring material being installed.

Installation

Professional installation to manufacturer specifications for hardwood, LVP, tile, or engineered wood.

Transitions

Transition strips between rooms and between different flooring types for clean, finished edges.

Base Shoe/Molding

Quarter-round or base shoe molding where the floor meets the baseboard for a finished look.

Furniture Moving

Standard furniture moved within the work area at the start of installation and replaced once complete.

Final Cleanup

Complete cleanup of the work area, removal of all debris, and a final walkthrough of the finished floors.

Local Knowledge

Why Connecticut Flooring Installation Requires Local Expertise

Connecticut's climate creates specific challenges for flooring that a contractor without local experience may not account for.

Seasonal humidity swings from the humid summers to the dry heating season in winter cause solid hardwood to expand and contract in ways that produce gaps, squeaks, and cupping when the material is not properly acclimated or when the wrong product is used in the wrong location. Proper acclimation before installation is essential. Solid hardwood needs three to five days on-site in your home's environment before it can be installed. Skipping acclimation, or delivering material to a job site and installing it the same day, is one of the most common flooring mistakes we see undone during renovation work.

Coastal homes in towns like Westport, Guilford, Milford, Madison, and Branford have elevated ambient humidity year-round from proximity to Long Island Sound. Salt air and higher baseline moisture levels affect material selection in these areas. Solid hardwood in a coastal home that experiences regular seasonal humidity above 60 percent will move more than the same product installed inland. We assess the specific conditions at your home and recommend accordingly.

Basement flooring has its own requirements in Connecticut. We test moisture levels in concrete slabs before recommending any flooring product for below-grade installation. LVP and tile are the reliable choices below grade. Engineered hardwood can work when moisture levels are confirmed to be consistently within acceptable ranges. Solid hardwood and carpet do not belong in Connecticut basements.

Pre-1980 Connecticut homes are also worth examining before assuming replacement is the right choice. A significant number of homes from this era have original hardwood flooring under carpet that was covered during a renovation decades ago. That wood is often structurally sound and worth restoring through sanding and refinishing rather than replacing. We assess what is there before recommending what to do with it.

FAQ

Flooring Installation Questions

What is the best flooring for Connecticut homes?+
The best flooring depends on the room, the level of the home, and the specific moisture conditions at your property. For above-grade living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms, solid hardwood is a proven choice that holds up to Connecticut's climate when properly acclimated and finished. For kitchens, entryways, and high-traffic areas above grade, LVP and tile both work well and handle regular moisture exposure from cooking, foot traffic, and weather tracked in from outside. For basements and below-grade spaces, LVP is the most reliable choice in Connecticut. For bedrooms, carpet remains popular and appropriate above grade where moisture exposure is not a factor. Coastal homes near Long Island Sound may need to avoid solid hardwood in areas of elevated ambient humidity even above grade, and we assess those conditions at the consultation.
How long does flooring installation take?+
Most residential flooring projects complete in two to five days. A single room takes one to two days including subfloor preparation, installation, and trim work. Multi-room installations covering 250 to 600 square feet typically take two to three days. Full-floor or whole-home installations covering 600 to 1,200 square feet take three to five days. Large whole-home projects or those with significant subfloor repairs may extend to seven to ten days. If you are installing solid hardwood, add three to five days for the required acclimation period before installation begins. When flooring is part of a larger renovation, the flooring timeline is embedded in the overall project schedule and does not typically extend the overall duration.
Can you install new flooring over existing flooring?+
In some cases, yes. LVP and engineered hardwood can often be installed directly over existing hard surfaces provided the subfloor is level, structurally sound, and within acceptable moisture parameters. We assess each situation individually. The key factors are whether the existing surface is level enough to avoid telegraphing irregularities through the new floor, whether the added height at thresholds and doors creates problems, and whether the existing material is adhered securely. In cases where overlay installation is appropriate, it saves the cost and time of removal. In cases where it is not, removal is the right choice and we will tell you why. We do not cover up problems.
What is the difference between solid and engineered hardwood?+
Solid hardwood is milled from a single piece of wood, typically three-quarters of an inch thick, and can be sanded and refinished multiple times over its lifetime. It performs best in above-grade rooms with stable humidity. Engineered hardwood is constructed with a real wood veneer layer bonded over a plywood core. The cross-layer construction makes it significantly more resistant to the expansion and contraction that humidity changes cause in solid wood. Engineered hardwood is appropriate for below-grade spaces, rooms over concrete slabs, and Connecticut homes where seasonal humidity swings are pronounced. It can typically be refinished once or twice depending on the veneer thickness. The right choice depends on where in your home the flooring is going and what the moisture conditions are.
Do I need to move furniture before flooring installation?+
We move standard furniture within the work area as part of the installation. This includes sofas, chairs, tables, beds, dressers, and similar household furniture. Heavy or specialty items such as grand pianos, gun safes, large antique armoires, or other exceptionally heavy pieces require specialty movers that we can help you coordinate in advance. Disconnecting and reconnecting appliances in the kitchen is part of the scope when flooring extends into kitchen areas. Anything mounted to walls, like bookcases that are anchored or built-in units, should be discussed at the consultation so we can plan accordingly. We will let you know at the proposal stage exactly what we will handle and if there is anything that needs separate coordination.
Does new flooring increase home value in Connecticut?+
Yes. Updated flooring is consistently rated among the top home improvements for return on investment by real estate professionals. In Connecticut specifically, hardwood flooring in living areas and LVP in kitchens, basements, and high-traffic zones are the combinations buyers expect to see. Outdated or damaged flooring is one of the first things buyers notice during showings, and it directly affects both perceived value and offer prices. Refinished or new hardwood floors in Fairfield and New Haven County homes regularly contribute to faster sales and stronger offers.
Do you offer financing for flooring projects?+
Yes. We offer flexible financing through GreenSky, which allows you to get approved in about 60 seconds and start your project right away. Financing options include low monthly payments and promotional periods depending on the plan you choose. We can walk you through the options during your consultation so you have a clear picture of both the project cost and the monthly payment before you commit to anything.
What happens if you find unexpected issues under the existing flooring?+
It happens regularly in Connecticut homes, especially those built before 1980. Common findings include water-damaged subfloor sections, asbestos-containing floor tiles, mold from prior leaks, or subfloor framing that has deteriorated. When we discover something unexpected, we contact you that same day, explain what we found, present your options with clear costs, and wait for your approval before proceeding. Any additional work is documented in a change order with a specific cost and timeline impact so there are no surprises on the final invoice.
