Full-Service Interior Painting Across Connecticut

Interior painting in Connecticut costs between $3 and $6 per square foot, including surface preparation, primer where needed, two finish coats, and complete cleanup. A typical room runs $800 to $2,500, and a whole-home interior averages $8,000 to $25,000 depending on size and trim complexity. Most projects complete in two to five days per room or phase, with whole-home work finishing in one to two weeks.

We provide interior painting across Fairfield County and New Haven County as a standalone service and as part of larger renovation projects. The prep work is what separates a paint job that holds for years from one that shows its age quickly. We spend the time on surfaces before we open a can.

Scope of Work

What Is Included in Interior Painting

Interior painting project in a Connecticut home by BuiltWell CT
Completed interior painting project in Woodbridge, CT by BuiltWell CT

Every interior painting project includes surface preparation, priming where needed, two coats of finish paint on walls, separate paint on trim and doors, furniture protection, and thorough cleanup before we leave each day and at project completion.

Surface preparation is the first and most important step. We clean wall surfaces, lightly sand where needed, fill nail holes and minor dings with appropriate filler, and caulk gaps along trim and at ceiling lines. For older Connecticut homes with plaster walls, prep may include skim coating sections where the plaster has cracked, separated from the lath, or been previously repaired poorly. We do not paint over problems.

Priming is applied wherever it is needed: over repaired areas, on surfaces with staining or bleed-through risk, on bare wood, and on any surface where adhesion may be a concern. We do not skip priming to save time.

We apply two coats of finish paint on all wall surfaces. Trim, doors, and moldings are painted separately with an appropriate sheen for durability and a clean line. Kitchens and bathrooms receive moisture-resistant formulations. High-traffic areas get durable satin or semi-gloss finishes.

Furniture is moved away from walls and protected with drop cloths before we begin. Floors are covered. Fixtures and hardware are masked. We clean up daily and fully at project end. The final walkthrough is our chance to catch anything that needs touching up before we call the job complete.

Local Knowledge

Why Connecticut Interior Painting Requires Local Expertise

Connecticut homes present surface conditions that painters without local experience regularly miss or handle incorrectly.

Homes built before 1978 may have lead-based paint on original surfaces. This applies to a significant portion of the housing stock across our service area, including Greenwich, New Haven, Hamden, and many other towns where pre-war and mid-century construction is common. Before any sanding, scraping, or surface disturbance on these homes, lead testing is appropriate and required under EPA RRP rules for contractors. We follow proper lead-safe work practices when applicable, and we can walk you through what that means for your specific project.

Older homes in Greenwich, Guilford, and New Haven frequently have plaster walls rather than drywall. Plaster requires different preparation techniques. Skim coating, proper priming, and the right filler materials all matter when working on surfaces that have been in place for 80 or 100 years. We know the difference and prep accordingly.

Coastal towns like Westport, Milford, Branford, Guilford, and Madison deal with elevated humidity and salt air. Moisture-resistant paint formulations perform better in these environments, particularly in kitchens, bathrooms, and any room facing Long Island Sound. We account for this when recommending products.

Pre-1920s homes in historic districts often have original trim profiles that need to be preserved. Towns like Greenwich, New Canaan, Ridgefield, and Guilford have historic district requirements. When painting involves these details, matching the existing profile and using appropriate techniques matters. We have worked in all of these conditions across both counties.

FAQ

Questions About Interior Painting in Connecticut

How much does interior painting cost in Connecticut?+
Interior painting in Connecticut costs $3 to $6 per square foot of wall area, with a typical single room running $800 to $2,500 and a complete whole-home interior ranging from $8,000 to $25,000 or more. The main variables are the size of the space, ceiling height, the amount of trim and molding that needs to be painted separately, and the condition of the surfaces going in. Rooms that need significant patching, skim coating on damaged plaster, or lead-safe prep procedures will cost more than rooms in good condition with standard walls. We walk through the space before quoting so the estimate reflects what the job actually requires. There are no line items that appear after the project starts.
Do you prep the surfaces before painting?+
Yes. Surface preparation is the first step on every interior painting project we take on. We fill nail holes, repair dings and minor cracks with appropriate filler, sand rough areas, and caulk gaps along trim and at ceiling lines before priming or painting begins. For older Connecticut homes with plaster walls, prep may include skim coating areas where the plaster has deteriorated or been previously patched improperly. We also follow lead-safe work practices for pre-1978 homes when sanding or scraping is involved. Proper prep is what determines how long a paint job holds up. A coat of paint over unprepared surfaces may look fine on day one and show its problems within a year. We do the prep correctly the first time.
Can you paint occupied rooms or do I need to move out?+
You do not need to move out. We work in occupied homes regularly. We move furniture away from walls, cover floors and fixtures, and work one room or one area at a time to keep disruption contained. The space is usable again within a day or two per room once paint has cured. For whole-home projects, we sequence the work to keep the most-used spaces livable while we move through the house. Kitchens and primary bathrooms are typically scheduled for efficient completion so you are not without them for extended periods. We discuss the sequence during the consultation and plan around your household's routine.
How long does interior painting take?+
Most single rooms complete in two to three days including prep, priming, and two finish coats. A whole-home interior for a 2,000 to 3,500 square foot home typically takes one to two weeks. The main factors that affect timeline are the number of rooms, ceiling height, surface condition, and how much trim and molding needs to be painted separately. Rooms with significant prep needs or lead-safe requirements take longer. We provide a specific timeline in your written proposal before work begins.
What type of paint do you use?+
We use professional-grade paints from established manufacturers. The specific product depends on the room's function: moisture-resistant formulations for kitchens and bathrooms, durable satin or semi-gloss for high-traffic areas, and flat or matte finishes for bedrooms and low-traffic spaces. We discuss options at different price points during the estimate so you can make an informed choice. We do not use contractor-grade or builder-grade paint.
Do you handle wallpaper removal?+
Yes. If your walls have wallpaper that needs to come down before painting, we handle the removal, address any adhesive residue, repair the underlying surface, and prime before applying finish paint. Wallpaper removal adds time and cost to the project, and we account for that in the estimate. Some wallpapers come off cleanly; others require skim coating the walls afterward. We assess the condition during the walk-through and include it in the proposal.
Can interior painting be done as part of a larger renovation?+
Yes. Interior painting coordinates naturally with nearly every renovation service we provide. In kitchen remodeling and bathroom remodeling projects, new wall surfaces and freshly installed trim need finish paint as part of the completed scope. Interior carpentry work, whether crown molding, wainscoting, or custom built-ins, always finishes with paint or stain. Basement finishing projects include painting as part of the complete scope. When we handle both the renovation and the painting, we schedule them in the correct order and do not leave the coordination to you.
Do you offer financing for interior painting projects?+
Yes. We offer flexible financing through GreenSky, which allows you to get approved in about 60 seconds and start your project right away. Financing options include low monthly payments and promotional periods depending on the plan you choose. We can walk you through the options during your consultation so you have a clear picture of both the project cost and the monthly payment before you commit to anything.
